About FLUSH

Facilitating
Learning for
Universal
Sanitation and
Hygiene

The mission of FLUSH is to increase awareness in the developed world around sanitation and hygiene to create a movement in changing the sanitation problems in the developing context.

As an organization, FLUSH finds inspiration from studies that show that to create philanthropic movements and changes, awareness must be built. Successful efforts to create radical changes start by building a shared understanding of the problems and the ecosystems in which the problems arise (Ditkoff & Grindle 2017)[1]. By working on the effort to build understanding and awareness around the global sanitation problems, FLUSH hopes to ultimately disrupt the sanitation markets and societal acceptance of the current sanitation situation.

One of the expected actions from FLUSH’s work is people changing their perceptions about sanitation as a public discussion. Sanitation and “toilets” are considered taboo currently in much of the developed world; our call to action for the developed world is for people to start creating open dialogue about sanitation and toilets and shifting their perceptions about sanitation from something that is ultra-private to something that is a public health concern that needs to be discussed, examined, and critically assessed for better improvements. Ultimately, this change in people’s perceptions about toilets and sanitation will drive more experimentation, more innovation, and more people interested in disrupting the market for sanitation in their own societies as well as for those less fortunate overseas.

In ten years, FLUSH hopes to facilitate and support success stories through education, advocacy, and consulting. These success stories would be of people who gained awareness around sanitation and hygiene and acted to create innovative and sustainable solutions to developed and developing country contexts.
